Gauteng-based machining company Jan Hugo Precision Engineering specialises in computer numerically controlled (CNC) milling, CNC turning and CNC wire eroding for small and large batches in a wide range of materials to produce a variety of components.
The 48-employee company’s product range includes orthopaedic devices, which it manufactures for Southern Medical, and dental devices, which it manufactures for Southern Implants. The company also manufactures components for Denel Land Systems as well as other defence-industry products for Denel Aerospace Systems.
The ISO 9001:2008-certified company’s sole owner, Jan Hugo, qualified as a turner machinist before spending several years in the tool design department of a large engineering company.
When Hugo founded the company in April 2001, the only major assets it had were one Haas CNC mini mill and one conventional lathe installed in his garage. Today, the company’s 500 m2 factory, at the Southern Implants office park, in Irene, is equipped with CNC milling, turning and wire eroding machines as well as a laser-marking machine. The main input materials used are titanium, super alloys, stainless steel, aluminium, copper and engineering plastics.
