Company Announcement - ITRI has announced the start of a new project to develop a progressive Code of Conduct for the global tin industry. Establishing a responsible industry is vital for the future sustainability and stability of the tin sector and both ITRI, and its members as industry leaders, will work together in close collaboration on this Code of Conduct project to develop methods to define and demonstrate progress towards that goal.

The Code of Conduct will culminate in a set of standards appropriate to the tin industry covering a range of topics including legal compliance, environmental management, health and safety, community engagement, and human rights as well as conflict related issues.

All ITRI members are fully committed to this project and believe that the Code of Conduct will be an important step to ensure that companies meet the expectations of modern consumers and supply chain partners. Standards which are common in the main tin use sectors such as electronics and packaging will be consulted with the aim to harmonise the vision of producers and consumers. The Code of Conduct will enable the positive actions of participating companies to be highlighted, and progress towards meeting the standards to be assessed. Ultimately it is viewed as a tool that will encourage more operators in the industry to consider these important issues and become engaged in the drive towards an increasingly responsible business.

ITRI will be playing the main co-ordinating role in activities and is considering offering the opportunity for participation to a wider range of companies involved in tin exploration, trading, or recycling in order to extend the potential positive impacts across the supply chain.

Kay Nimmo, Manager of Sustainability & Regulatory Affairs at ITRI commented: “ITRI has been leading the way in tin supply chain responsibility for a number of years now, and we believe that the introduction of the Code of Conduct is an exciting opportunity that will provide tin users and other stakeholders with further confidence that the industry is both sustainable and proactively forward thinking”.

As a first step ITRI have released a Statement summarising the core values to which its members aspire, and this will form the foundation on which the Code of Conduct will be developed and implemented over the next few years. An introduction sheet is also available which provides additional information on how and why the Code is being developed.
