Name and Location
Interocean canal project, Nicaragua.

Client
Nicaragua government and HK Nicaragua Canal Investment.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of a 277 km canal from the mouth of the Brito river on the Pacific side to the Punta Gorda river on the Caribbean side.

The proposed canal will pass through Lake Nicaragua, Central America’s largest lake, and will be between 230 m and 520 m wide and 27.6 m deep.

The canal will be three times longer than the 77 km Panama canal.

The project will include six subprojects – the canal, including locks; two ports; a free trade zone; holiday resorts; an international airport; and roads.

In addition, a power station, cement factory, steel factory and other related facilities will be built to ensure the successful completion of the canal within five years.

Value
The project is estimated at $40-billion.

Duration
Construction is expected to start in December this year and be completed in 2019, with operations beginning in 2020.

Latest Developments
Nicaraguan government officials, businessmen and academics have approved the proposed route for the canal.

The proposed route is still subject to environmental- and social-impact studies, which could recommend some changes to the plan.

Opponents to the plan are concerned about the canal’s effect on Lake Nicaragua and the impact on poor communities.
