The PSD series of direct drives from halstrup-walcher not only incorporates a stepper motor but all the relevant sub-systems such as control, bus interface and incremental or absolute measurement system. The drives for automatic format changeover have a compact design and operate at speeds of up to 1500 r.p.m. which is ideal when machine axles have to be adjusted frequently for small batch sizes. The machine can be adjusted to a different format almost instantaneously.

The size of the PSD positioning system depends on the stepper motor selected – Nema 17 or 23 stepper motors are available. In the version of the direct drive with a solid circular shaft, the motors act as the mounting flange. The integrated drives offer a wide range of attractive and profitable options. For optimum integration into the machine, the drives can also be supplied with a hollow shaft attachment (optional). This allows them to be mounted directly on the spindle without a coupling. For higher torques a gearbox is also used in the housing – enabling the drive to achieve torques of up to 10 Nm. The design is highly flexible with a rotating housing and variable connector alignment. It can be integrated into the machine without angle plugs.

halstrup-walcher’s electronics and software systems are based on its more than 20 years of experience in the area of format changeover. The 32 bit incremental measurement system provides reliable position reporting. The optional absolute measurement system (no battery required) always knows the drive’s precise position – with no reference run or maintenance costs.

The device is addressed simply using rotary switches. A power feedback circuit protects the internal electronics against generator operation and manual turning. Condition monitoring for the systems supports predictive maintenance of the machine.

At the Hannover Messe 2018, the product family will be presented with CANopen and IO-Link.
However, the controls can also be implemented using the PROFIBUS DP, DeviceNet, Modbus RTU, Sercos, EtherCAT, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and POWERLINK bus systems at the customer’s request. halstrup-walcher already supplies the PSE 3 series of positioning systems with all ten buses.
