Branded electrical equipment and industrial instrumentation suppliers Magnet Group – sole distributors for Mars light-emitting diode (LED) Lighting System – were appointed technology suppliers for the installation of an energy efficient lighting management system for a Boxer Superstores supermarket, which opened in Cape Town at the end of 2015, to reduce electricity consumption and enhance the aesthetics of the supermarket.

“The demand for electricity for at least 14 operating hours a day, necessitates a reliable, low-energy system to efficiently illuminate the store, which is about 2 300 m2,” says Magnet MD Brian Howarth, adding that the company’s solution for this project involved the combination of robust light fittings and the latest LED technology.

As part of the lighting systems that were installed, power and conservation company Energywise’s LED linear strips with aluminium housings, were mounted onto P2000 style trunking. These fittings, which were supplied in 39.5 W and 77 W, have a lamp life of at least 50 000 hours.

The extruded rail in the supermarket allows for the easy mounting and replacement of LED boards; an electronic driver, with adjustable output settings, ensures flicker-free operation. The modular design of the fittings facilitates the customisation of lengths, lumen, output and wattage to suit every application, Howarth explains.

Also installed were the GreenPerform 140 W LED highbay luminaires of lifestyle and lighting technology company Philips. The silver, powder- coated aluminium luminaires are designed to turn on instantly during a power failure and protect against the ingress of dust and water. They ensure a reliable lighting performance, with high-rack optics that are designed to illuminate vertical planes in warehouses he notes.

The Philips 80 W Tango floodlights, also part of the lighting management systems, incorporate an LED light source, and an optical system, heat sink and driver into one housing. These energy efficient luminaires were mounted on trunnion brackets and offer asymmetric and symmetric lighting distribution, with lumen (LM) outputs of between 4 000 LM and 12 000 LM.

The installation also encompasses robust bulkhead lights and new-generation, energy efficient Philips LED recessed fittings. The fittings, with a colour rendering index of less than 80 and an optimal power factor, are the replacement solution for conventional fluorescent lighting thermoluminescent dosimeter lamps to provide an improved comfort level of lighting.

Magnet Lighting Solutions engineer Kaylen Reddy says there were not any challenges during the installation of these lighting systems, which can be attributed to the products’ ease of installation.

“The luminaire was designed to slide into a P2000 channel, held together by magnets. All the installer has to do is connect the power supply and push the luminaire into the P2000, which takes about three minutes a luminaire,” he explains, adding that installation took less than a day using three certified electricians.

Meanwhile, Magnet’s research and development is done in-house, with its engineers persistently working to find new ways to improve the quality and efficiency of its LED systems.

Howarth points out that the company’s new training facility often hosts LED lighting seminars to keep people aware of the ever-advancing technology.

Apart from lighting solutions, Magnet’s energy- saving service also incorporates metering, hot water systems, air-conditioning controls and solar systems. This project management service has contributed significantly to the reduction of wasted energy in the industrial and commercial sectors in South Africa.
