Company Announcement - It is businesses that seeks to go beyond the ordinary that are able to grab their audience’s attention. As the world goes green South Africa is determined not to be left behind. Future cities have become an important agenda in the South Africa business space, it is said that future cities will be make their advent in South Africa in the next 5 to 10 years and Standard Bank has taken the first steps towards that by building the Standard Bank UX Lab.

Dubbed the PlayRoom, this is a 1 927 square metre creative hub in Johannesburg that seeks to unearth disruptive ideas from staff, customers and start-up businesses, allowing the bank to research and test in a controlled environment, before releasing new solutions into the market. According to Vuyo Mpako, head of Innovation and Channel Design at Standard Bank: “This is probably the biggest step we have taken to bring us closer to our customers. The vision is that the PlayRoom will form an integral part of our ongoing efforts to find innovative solutions that solve real customer needs and challenges. It is our response to the changing customer landscape. We met up with Kevin Baker, the National Sales Manager of Hisense VRF, and found out what their contribution was in the erection of this innovative building. The building will have a lot of traffic and it is essential that the right environment is prepared, Hisense VRF was the supplier of the air-conditioning system for the lab. Kevin Baker shares their experience as they embarked in this project.

What was the initial challenge before you got there and how did you work at solving that problem?
We needed cost effective, energy saving comfort cooling air-conditioning systems for the Standard Bank Project. The systems had to be GREEN certified with Ozone friendly R410a gas. Each individual office had to have its own thermostat for the occupant to be able to have full control over their own desired temperature. Filibiz Investments then recommended the Hisense VRF product that has all the customer’s requirements as standard features. The Hisense VRF system is an energy saving Inverter driven system that supplies the precise amount of cooling or heating to the office space without any over cooling or heating (energy wastage) taking place. The Inverter controlled system is able to keep the exact temperature required by the user due to the precise refrigerant flow managed by the inverter system and intelligent controls thus enabling precise temperature comfort for the client. We utilized full heat recovery systems that allowed each client to have either heating or cooling simultaneously and by doing this, exchanging hot or cold air between the different offices in the form of gas while the outdoor unit runs in one mode.  The systems utilized were of the R410a ozone friendly gas type.

What you learnt as you did this project?
We learnt that the Hisense VRF systems is a very easy product to install with extremely quite indoor and outdoor units. We learned that the temperature control in the offices was precise and comfortably controlled at all times as per our mandate.  It was also found that the system was extremely easy to commission, the controls were simple and easy to use and there were no hidden surprises to delay the timeous completion of this project. The client and contractor were very impressed with the equipment and added that they would certainly use this product again without hesitation.

The Standard Bank UX Lab is where creativity, innovation and business meet. The facility also features a state-of-the-art testing area where customers will test new innovations and can provide invaluable insights and help to create a seamless User Experience journey for all Standard Bank’s offerings. Standard Bank will be able to integrate both its customer and staff into the creative design process. It is pleasing to see South African companies embracing technology and innovation, but in order for those that are brave enough to invest in out-of-the-box projects, they need partners that embrace the same kind of thinking, and HiSense VRF has proven to be a trusted partner.
