Industry mourns death of retail pioneer Raymond Ackerman
The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) has noted "with great sadness" the death of Pick n Pay (PnP) founder Raymond Ackerman.
Ackerman was an entrepreneur of note and a pioneer in the retail business, it says.
“The many jobs created by PnP, millions of [rands in] taxes generated to the fiscus by the PnP ecosystem over the years and the creation of the many businesses that are dependent on PnP, is a testament to his pedigree, excellence and massive contribution to South Africa,” Sacci states.
Industry organisation Business Unity South Africa (Busa) adds that South Africa has lost one of its most iconic business figures.
“His remarkable legacy and resolute commitment to championing consumer rights, promoting inclusivity and fostering an entrepreneurial spirit set a benchmark at that time,” Busa comments.
CEO Cas Coovadia says Ackerman’s remarkable journey in the South African business sector has left an indelible mark and that his legacy is one of resilience, integrity and dedication.
“We aim to honour him by continuing to drive business growth, unity and prosperity in our beloved nation,“ Coovadia concludes.
Ackerman died on September 7 at the age of 92. He opened the first Pick n Pay hypermarket in Boksburg in 1975, following smaller stores he established in Cape Town in 1967.
