International industrial and retail software group JDA Software is expanding in South Africa and is enabling industrial companies to manage their profitability against price fluctuations and to manage their supply chains efficiently and rationally, says JDA Group Europe, Middle East and Africa head of manufacturing industries Hans-Georg Kaltenbrunner.

As more developing economies move away from raw materials production, owing to intense price competition and low profitability, towards medium-technology component and subsystem manufacturing, there is increasing demand for more sophisticated tools to manage quality, profitability and best practices to compete internationally.

“This trend is common in emerging markets, owing to changes in industry, and is positive. However, this does place cost and price pressures on existing primary industrial sectors, such as steel-manufacturing industries.

“Steelmakers, for example, can use our software to manage their profitability amid the almost daily price fluctuations and competition by identifying good customers and appropriately priced deals, as well as by immediately assessing the impact that various deals will have on profitability,” he explains.

The basis of JDA Group’s software capabilities is its long-term expertise in providing developed-world industrial supply chains software systems and a focus on driving supply chain efficiencies through effective business-to-business software platforms.

This includes rationalising decision-making in terms of sales to differentiate between spot-buying behaviour, which does not often result in repeat business, and long-term customer identification to boost the profitability and sustainability of the company.

“This is one of the factors that is providing us with considerable traction and adoption in South African, African and Middle Eastern industries. Our software enables companies to increase their profitability sustainably in the sectors that make economic sense by providing decision support information and performance analysis to improve top-line revenue and lower costs that affect the bottom line of a company,” says Kaltenbrunner.

“The technology enables our customers to identify gaps in their supply chain management and in their sales management, as well as to conduct analyses to inform decision-making to close such gaps. This also includes identifying different business segments to manage the pressure on business profitability margins. We have a comprehensive knowledge of best practices in different industries and provide the tools for analyses to guide the resultant decisions made,” he adds.

JDA Group also provides its systems for groups of smaller companies, such as transportation logistics in South Africa that is not dominated by large companies, to share the information and functionality of the system, Kaltenbrunner concludes.
