Firefighting and fire protection equipment manufacturer Elkhart Brass Manufacturing Company has received Factory Mutual (FM) approval for its Industrial Spitfire monitor and four models of its X-Stream industrial nozzles.

FM rigorously tests and evaluates products against stringent guidelines and has concluded that the Elkhart Brass products meet, or exceed, its standards, the company states.

The Spitfire monitor, a water canon, has a 10 cm waterway that is capable of discharging 7600 ℓ/m at 200 psi. It can rotate 360° and has a vertical range of 135°. It is made from corrosion-resistant brass, and requires little maintenance.

The X-Stream nozzles are made from corrosion-resistant brass, and have satin brass finishes. They automatically adjust to maintain an effective stream at maximum reach with reduced or variable flows. Calibrated for lower pressures, to account for ‘real-world conditions’, they have hydrodynamic vanes that allow for a ‘narrow fog’ of 30° and a ‘wide fog’ of 90°.

The X-Stream models that received FM approval are the SM-1250BE-HL and SM2000BE-HL nozzles for hazardous location firefighting, and the SM-1250BE-HLGM and SM-2000BE-HLGM nozzles for gas mitigation.

The SM-1250BE-HL and the SM-1250BE-HLGM are capable of discharging 4 750 ℓ/m, while the SM2000BE-HL and the SM-2000BE-HLGM can dis-charge 7 600 ℓ/m.

The company notes that the Spitfire water cannon and X-Stream nozzles encompass the core of the Elkhart Brass ECHO Electric Remote Control Monitor System. The ECHO System is designed for industrial firefighting, and is primarily installed when an area is too dangerous to deploy personnel.

It poses no risk as an ignition source and is, therefore, ideal for hazardous areas where the potential for combustion is present, the company says.

The ECHO System provides earlier warnings, facilitates faster responses, and reduces property damage. It can be applied in refineries, chemical plants, loading docks, pulp and paper mills, and transfer stations.

Established in 1902, Elkhart Brass is an experienced manufacturer of firefighting equipment in the US. The company manufactures 2 000 products that are used in almost every aspect of firefighting, and has divisions dedicated to product research, development, engineering and testing.

Elkhart Brass will be exhibiting at BAUMA CONEXPO AFRICA 2015, which runs from September 15 to 18 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre.
