Motor control centre (MCC), distribution board, control desk, PLC and instrumentation enclosure, and portable and containerised substation manufacturer Shaw Controls, a member of Zest WEG Group, has registered a significant increase in the demand for electrical houses (e-houses), fully withdrawable MCCs and modular variable-speed drives (VSDs).

Shaw Controls MD Bevan Richards says the company is currently focused on the design and establishment of a stand- alone e-house and container conversion facility. The company is also in the process of establishing a centralised bulk store for the receipt and issue of all goods, in line with its new inventory control system, as part of its commitment to ISO 9001 processes.

He explains that the growth and expansion at Shaw Controls is in line with Zest’s overall strategy. “Zest WEG Group, as a whole, has the management team and overall company structure in place to be able to handle large projects. It is also able to provide the customer care needed on multiple projects for different customers and to do so efficiently and cost effectively.”

Richards further reveals that Shaw Controls is integrating its product range with those of Zest Weg’s other group companies that are involved in large-scale turnkey projects. “This represents a significant opportunity for us to add value to our own product range by capitalising on the knowledge and experience of the entire group,” he details.

Shaw Controls’ e-houses are a cost-effective alternative to traditional containerised solutions manufactured in either 6 m or 12 m standard marine containers. The main benefit of the e-houses is that they can be manufactured to customised dimensions.

Shaw Controls also supplies WEG modular VSDs for loads of up to 2.5 MW at 690 V. “Modular VSDs were previously built and assembled by WEG Brazil, and in future, Shaw Controls, as the South African arm of WEG, will develop the enclosures and populate them with modular VSD components from WEG.

“The advantage of these modular VSD products now being assembled in South Africa is that they represent a substantial reduction in the lead time of any project,” he explains.

Shaw Controls product development specialist Santos Ferreira adds that all the company’s products have now been tested to the latest IEC 61439-1 standard. The maximum rating that all products have been tested at is 690 V +5% at 65 kA.

“We are also in the process of locally developing the WEG range of fully withdrawable MCCs. This pro- duct range is suitable for all types of process-type industries and will add great value to Shaw Controls’ product range,” Ferreira adds.

Meanwhile, Zest WEG Group CEO Louis Meiring highlights that the market’s increased demand has resulted in Zest WEG Group committing to a major expansion drive at Shaw Controls as the group expands its manufacturing capability to boost its presence in the South African and broader African market, which it perceives as a major growth area.

“While Zest WEG Group is well known for distributing one of the largest electric motor ranges in the world from WEG Brazil, our comprehensive product line-up includes switchgears, VSDs, MCCs, generator sets and renewable- energy solutions. We also have three fully fledged manufacturing facilities in South Africa that we are in the process of expanding as we increase our footprint in Africa,” he concludes.
