Gold miner Harmony Gold Mining says an employee tragically lost his life at its Kusasalethu mine, near Carletonville, on March 23 and that the nature of the incident leading to the loss of life is still to be confirmed.

“This is a tragic and regrettable loss for all of us. We have been putting in every effort as a company, involving all our stakeholders, to ensure the safety of all our employees. We will continue to apply Harmony’s integrated approach towards risk management that involves our employees, all stakeholders and working environment.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased during this sad time,” says Harmony CEO Peter Steenkamp.

The company has reached out to the relevant authorities, as well as the family of the deceased and the affected employees, to provide assistance wherever possible.

All work in the affected section has been temporarily halted, pending a comprehensive internal investigation.
