The hand-held and power tools market is not easy to enter, as new players first have to prove themselves in one or more facets, says diversified technology com-pany 3M South Africa.
3M abrasive systems product manager Dylan Hunter says there are not many newcomers entering the hand-held and power tools market. New players may fail to meet decision-making criteria, may not meet the price or quality criteria or have not formed brand perceptions in the mar-ket.
The market is divided into customers who are brand loyal and stick to what they know and customers who are price sensitive and who substitute quality for price, he adds.
He emphasises that con-sumers are constantly looking for high-quality products at affordable prices from brands they trust.
To that end, 3M continually strives to supply innovative products to the market to meet these customer needs.
Its products include a file belt sander and a disc sander, developed in the US in 2010, for use in the hand-held and power tools market.
The 3M file belt sander is used in a variety of metalworking applications and works well in hard-to-reach areas, says Hunter.
The sander is lightweight, durable and provides a good power-to-weight ratio. Both the belt housing guard and handle rotate a full 360° and the belt cover allows for easy access for quick belt changes.
The 3M file belt sander weighs 1.3 kg, is 370 mm long and 74.5 mm high.
3M disc sanders are used for a variety of metalworking applications and form part of the 3M Roloc system.
The product is suitable for light blending and finishing, light grinding and deburring and more aggressive grinding applications.
“Our disc sanders are ergo- nomically friendly and decrease wrist strain, promote easy handling and offer a secure grip,” says Hunter.
3M Abrasive Systems strives to provide solutions as opposed to individual product offerings. “Our aim is to optimise perfor- mance with the perfect sys-tem,” he adds.
