Green electric power generation equipment supplier Vert Energy announced in March that it had extended its range of electric power generation (EPG) components to meet growing demand from generator set (genset) builders and the electromechanical power transmission industries.

“An increase in energy requirements has placed power utilities under enormous pressure throughout the African continent, which is why companies are investing in alternative sources of electricity production,” says Vert Energy MD Grant Robertson, adding that the company has established partnerships with turnkey solutions providers in a variety of sectors, including the mining, shipping, agriculture, general engineering, rail, gas and petrochemicals industries.

“Through an extensive range of quality-branded EPG products and a skilled team of technical experts, Vert Energy plays a major role in providing dependable power to companies, even in Africa’s most remote regions,” says Robertson.

He asserts that, as part of Vert Energy’s commitment to the genset manufacturing sector and to ensuring a swift supply of reliable components, Vert Energy has made a substantial investment in sourcing the finest components that produce electric energy from mechanical systems – components that can withstand the harsh operating conditions of Africa.

Robertson points out that the company has been appointed as the exclusive sub-Saharan Africa distributor for leading power generation brands, such as Leroy Somer (LS) alternators, DEIF generator controls and Covrad heat exchangers.

“A critical part of our service is the availability, throughout Africa, of factory and original-equipment-manufacturer-trained technicians who cope efficiently with any electromechanical breakdown situation or routine preventive maintenance procedures,” he says.

Leroy Somer Alternators
LS is the largest producer of genset alternators globally, providing clean energy solutions. LS alternators, with ratings in excess of 20 000 kW, are suitable for all drive systems – to supply electrical power on board a ship or to deprived regions, or for preventing interruptions to the main grid supply.

LS alternators, which are known for their ease of integration and enhanced energy saving capacity, are also recognised for their high-quality performance and reliability in demanding applications and harsh environments.

The modular design of these alternators means that the basic universal unit can be adapted to suit any initial source of power.

The LS industrial range of low- and medium-voltage alternators – including 50 Hz and 60 Hz alternators, and four-pole and six-pole alternators, from 10 kW to 3 900 kW – is designed for gensets driven by gas or diesel engines, or by gas, steam, wind or hydroturbines.

Meanwhile, LS’s AREP excitation system is a brushless, self-excited system known for its efficient performance and enhanced safety features. It enables a short-circuit current of about three times the rated current to be maintained for ten seconds. This means that a circuit breaker can be tripped – if there is a fault – without disturbing other loads supplied by the alternator.

Also in the LS range are alternators designed for specialised application, such as in agriculture, for example. The robust Tractelec is a generator driven by a tractor’s power take-off shaft, providing an alternative source of energy production. This triphased partner alternator, which operates efficiently in demanding farming environments, is coupled to a gearbox with oil-cooled lubrication and an electrical protection and distribution box.
