PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The federal government has announced a review of its delivery arrangements for the National Landcare Progamme to ensure it is effective and continues to target natural resource management priorities.

The government is investing A$1-billion over four years to support better natural resource management across Australia, Environment and Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg pointed out on Thursday.

“The National Landcare Programme is a key part of the Coalition government’s commitment to assist communities to support the protection, conservation and rehabilitation of Australia’s natural environment and to deliver more sustainable agriculture,” the Minister said.

The programme funds priority areas including Regional Landcare Facilitators, Environment Stewardship, the 20 Million Trees Programme, World Heritage management and Indigenous Protected Areas.

"The Landcare community is invaluable in delivery, innovation and knowledge sharing in sustainable agriculture and environmental activities. It has a vital role in opening up new opportunities to support the important work that farmers and natural resource managers do."

It also assists Australia to meet its obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Kyoto Protocol, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and Australia’s Biodiversity Conservation Strategy 2010-2030.

“The Coalition remains committed to protecting the environment and our productive landscapes through community action and engagement, ensuring we meet our international and national obligations,” Frydenberg said.

Local Landcare groups, land managers, industry and environment groups, traditional owners, regional natural resource management organisations and other interested stakeholders have the opportunity to comment on the review of the National Landcare Programme until October 14.
