Gold producers, NUM meet; bilaterals now concluded
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – South Africa’s gold producers on Monday met with trade union the National Union of Mineworkers as part of the ongoing gold industry wage negotiations.
This followed a series of bilateral meetings last week between gold producers AngloGold Ashanti, Evander Gold Mines, Harmony Gold, Sibanye Gold and Village Main Reef and trade unions Solidarity, UASA and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union individually.
With the bilateral engagements now concluded, collective meetings with all unions would take place later this week as the gold wage negotiations continued.
Solidarity on Monday said the Chamber of Mines, representing the gold producers, would present its final offer to trade unions on Thursday.
However, Solidarity general-secretary Gideon du Plessis said the chamber’s final offer was unlikely to be accepted by organised labour, warning of the strong possibility of a strike.
