Global steel association welcomes new ISO standard
The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has welcomed the publication of an International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) standard that defines the calculation method of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission intensity from iron and steel production.
The standard was based on the worldsteel CO2 data collection methodology used for the past five years in the steel industry and was available for steel plants with blast furnaces or electric arc furnaces.
Launched in 2007, worldsteel’s CO2 data collection methodology aimed to provide steel producers with a reliable benchmark for their CO2 emissions, with the number of participating organisations having increased from 38 companies at its launch, to more than 200 steel plants today.
Of these, 33 steel organisations had reported their CO2 emissions data using this methodology for five consecutive years as part of worldsteel’s Climate Action programme.
“We are very pleased with the published standard, as it confirms the validity and relevance of our methodology. This globally developed and supported standard will drive the continued uptake of this methodology by the industry,” said worldsteel director-general Edwin Basson.
