Global crude steel production rises by 6.4% y/y

Crude steel production in the 64 countries that report to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) increased by 6.4% year-on-year to 156.7-million tonnes in April, worldsteel reports.

China’s crude steel production for April was 85-million tonnes – a 12.7% year-on-year increase.

India produced 8.8-million tonnes of crude steel, which was up 1.5% year-on-year, while Japan produced 8.6-million tonnes of crude steel in April, which was 0.8% lower year-on-year.

South Korea produced six-million tonnes of crude steel, which was 1.4% more than that produced in April 2018.

Italy produced two-million tonnes, which was down 5.7% year-on-year, while France recorded an 8.1% year-on-year decrease in output to 1.3-million tonnes.

Spain’s production was 4.4% lower year-on-year at 1.3-million tonnes.

The US increased its output by 7.3% year-on-year to 7.4-million tonnes.

South Africa’s steel output increased by 18.5% year-on-year to about 576 000 t, while Egypt’s production increased by 18% year-on-year to 726 000 t in April.

Worldsteel members represent around 85% of global steel production.
