JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – News that diversified miner Glencore is restarting its Lady Loretta zinc mine in north-west Queensland is adding to a regional jobs story, with 250 people to find employment as a result of the miner’s decision to resume phased production next year.

“What we are seeing right across commodities is a jobs story especially in regional economies. We’ve seen 550 jobs added to the market this week with Glencore Copper and Lady Loretta and Rio Tinto announcing an extra 100 at its Weipa operations,” Queensland Resources Council (QRC) CEO Ian Macfarlane said on Wednesday.

A recent survey by ManpowerGroup states that the prospect of finding a job in the Australian mining and construction sector for the first quarter of 2018 is the strongest it has been in more than six years. The Australian Employment Outlook survey ascribes a net employment outlook for the sector of 23%, with Queensland’s outlook at 15%.

Glencore plans to begin phased production at Lady Loretta, near Mt Isa, in the first half of 2018, with 100 000 t to be added to production next year and a further 60 000 t in the following year. The zinc mine was placed under care and maintenance two years ago.
