Together with companies such as SMS Meer and SMS Concast, SMS Siemag forms part of a strong global network of companies known as the SMS group, which is the global leader in providing processing technology, equipment, components, spare parts, and technical services for the steel, ferro-alloy, and non-ferrous metals industries. The SMS group has our origin in the Siegerland region in the centre of Germany.

The SMS group generated an order intake in business year 2012 of EUR 2.835 billion (2011: EUR 3.423 billion). Sales increased by five percent to EUR 3.237 billion (2011: EUR 3.070 billion). Both Business Areas, SMS Siemag and SMS Meer, clearly felt the impact of customers’ restraint in placing orders. Specifically, order intake by SMS Siemag contracted by 24 percent to EUR 1.519 billion (2011: 2.007 billion). SMS Meer experienced a decrease by 16 percent to EUR 1.152 billion (2011: EUR 1.365 billion). The elexis group contributed an unchanged order intake of EUR 180 million to the SMS group in 2012..

On average over 2012, the number of employees in the SMS group – including apprentices – was 11,822 (2011: 10,477). Due to the acquisition of the majority share in Paul Wurth, the number of employees in the SMS group increased to a total of 13,588 at the end of 2012.

Dr. Heinrich Weiss, Chairman and CEO of the SMS group, stated: „Despite a persistent reluctance of our customers to invest, we expect a slight recovery on the market by the end of the year. Based on the continued high level of orders in hand, and taking into account the effects of the first full year of consolidation of the Paul Wurth group this year, we anticipate a modest increase in sales compared to 2012, but a decline in profit."

SMS Siemag South Africa has a long standing record of successfully implementing various projects in Southern Africa in various areas of steel, ferro-alloy, and non-ferrous metals projects.

The implementation of SMS Siemag’s client focussed service philosophy through forming both technology & business partnerships with our clients have been well accepted by our clients over the recent years.

Through our own experience and also further consultation with our existing and potentially new clients, and other stakeholders we anticipate continued growth within our selected industries in Africa. In reaction to this, the SMS Group, and in specific SMS Siemag AG is expanding it’s presence and footprint in South Africa. In 2011 SMS Siemag AG acquired Metix, and in 2012 Paul Wurth South Africa. More recently, we have commenced certain feasibility studies to expand our local workshop facilities.

With Metix joining SMS Siemag we have expanded our local expertise in Submerged Arc Furnace (SAF) technology. With Paul Wurth also more recently joining our group we are vertically integrating our technology value proposition into iron making. Now we can offer our clients an integrated solution for the production of both flat and long steel products.

We look forward to the opportunity to further engaging with our various African clients, which includes various global key clients of the SMS group with African growth strategies.
