Name and Location
Gebze-Orhangazi-Izmir motorway project, Turkey.

Client
The project is being implemented by Otoyol, a consortium comprising Turkish companies Nurol İnşaat ve Ticaret, Özaltın İnşaat, Makyol İnşaat, and Gocay Insaat, as well as Italian construction company Astaldi.

In November 2013, one of the company’s shareholders, Yüksel İnşaat, transferred all its shares in Otoyol to Nurol İnşaat ve Ticaret; Özaltın İnşaat, Ticaret ve Sanayi; and Makyol İnşaat, Sanayi, Turizm ve Ticaret.

Project Description
The new motorway will shorten the road distance between Gebze and Izmir by more than 140 km.

The 427 km road project, comprising 384 km of motorway and 43 km of connecting roads, includes the construction of a suspension bridge; 29 viaducts 18.21 km in length; two tunnels, 5.1 km in length and 199 bridges.

The project also includes 18 toll collection centres, five maintenance and operation centres, seven service areas and seven park areas.

Phase 1 of the project entails the construction of the 53 km Gebze-Orhangazi section of the motorway, for which an engineering, procurement and construction contract worth $2.3-billion was awarded to the NOMAYG joint venture in September 2011. This includes the 3.3 km Izmit Bay suspension bridge, which will be built at the eastern end of the Sea of Marmara.

It will connect the northern and southern coasts of Izmit Bay.

The bridge will be one of the largest suspension bridges in the world and the fourth-longest suspension bridge by length of central span.

Value
The total investment is estimated at $6.4-billion. In December 2014, a consortium of nine banks restructured the financing for the highway project to $5-billion, while the maturity was extended to 15 years from a previous seven.

Duration
The project broke ground in October 2010 and is expected to be completed by 2018.
