The growing prominence of the Gautrain project can be illustrated by the fact that the rapid-rail link - with construction ramping up sharply - has received some R200-million worth of free publicity over the last few years, says Gautrain Management Agency CEO Jack van der Merwe.

"We do around 900 interviews - on the television and in magazines and so forth - on the train each month."

The Gautrain, which will carry an estimated 300 000 passengers a day by 2011, will see a minimum of six trains an hour running in peak times between Johannesburg, Tshwane and the OR Tambo International Airport by 2011.

Here is a visual update of the R25,1-billion project, first conceptualised in the late 1990s.

SANDTON STATION Underground station construction works are ongoing in the cavern section between the south and north shafts, as well as within the shafts themselves. Construction of the station's three level underground parkade is progressing, with the multiple parking decks clearly visible from the surrounding buildings. The tunnel being excavated from the southern end of the station towards Rosebank has progressed to 663 m

TRAIN DEPOT The train maintenance workshops and the other depot facilities, including the washing bay for cleaning the trains and a sand-filling facility, are complete. The trains are equipped with a sand-dispensing mechanism, which deposits a special type of sand onto the rails to improve traction between the wheels and the rail when necessary. Gautrain's 24 train sets will be maintained, serviced, and cleaned at the depot, an stabled overnight securely

CENTURION STATION Viaduct five carries the elevated rail alignment through Centurion, and supports the elevated Centurion station platforms, located about midway along its length. This viaduct stretches from the John Vorster interchange, crossing the N1 in the south, and then continues through Centurion to the Jean Avenue interchange, crossing the Ben Schoeman highway in the north. At Centurion station, foundation grouting is ongoing
