Fuso Trucks Southern Africa (FTSA), a division of Daimler Trucks & Buses Southern Africa (DTBSA), has launched its second made-in-India truck in South Africa.

The Fuso FJ 16-230 follows in the footsteps of the FA 9-137, introduced last year.

While the market initially raised questions around the quality of the product, sales have shown that customers have warmed to the newcomers.

FTSA traditionally sourced its product from Japan.

DTBSA executive director Kobus van Zyl says 2016 Fuso sales in South Africa will be up an estimated 10% on 2015 sales.

“The made-in-India products are growing at an even faster rate this year, and we see this trend continuing.

“We had an aggressive sales target on the FA 9, but have doubled this already.”

Van Zyl says the FA and FJ models will be followed by more vehicles from the Daimler Chennai factory.

The made-in-India Fuso range provides DTBSA with a competitor in the intermediately priced segment of the market, notes Van Zyl, instead of the premium segment, where the company usually competes.

Competitors include Hino, Isuzu Trucks and UD Trucks, says FTSA national sales manager Ziyad Gaba.

Van Zyl reiterates DTBSA’s commitment to eventually assemble the new Fuso products at DTBSA’s East London plant, in the Eastern Cape, instead of importing the trucks as fully built-up units.

“We have a 100% commitment to assemble from completely knocked down kits as soon as possible. We just need a change in the production process in India to allow for this. This process is more imminent than long term, as localisation is becoming a requirement everywhere in the world.”

The medium to heavy-duty FJ 16-230 is aimed at customers in a wide range of sectors, including distribution, rental, courier and small- and medium-sized enterprises.

This product fills a gap left in the current Fuso line-up, says FTSA product manager Harry Makitla.

The 16.6 t, 4 x 2 rigid truck, with its heavy-duty suspension, offers a payload of up to 8 t.

The Euro-3 FJ has a 6.37-litre, water-cooled, direct-injection, turbocharged diesel engine, offering a power output of 170 kW at 2 200 rpm, with the torque levelling at 810 Nm between 1 200 rpm to 1 600 rpm.

The vehicle has a six -speed manual transmission.

Inside there is a three-way adjustable driver seat and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, which allows the driver to choose an optimum driving position.

The cabin is fitted with air-conditioning as standard, and rear windows.

Driver aids include a green band indicator that shows the driver the correct gear and speed required to minimise fuel consumption.

The recommended retail price for the short-wheel-base model is R630 000 and R640 000 for the long-wheel-base model.
