Former Lesotho Minister joins Anglo board
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Anglo American has appointed former Lesotho Health and Social Welfare Minister Dr Mphu Ramatlapeng as nonexecutive director, with immediate effect.
Ramatlapeng is an expert in the field of healthcare in Africa, with a particular focus on HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria in Southern Africa. She currently serves as vice-chairperson of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.
Ramatlapeng also holds the position of executive VP of HIV and TB for the Clinton Health Access Initiative, where she is responsible for the development and oversight of organisation-wide strategies to combat these two diseases.
In her role as Minister of Health and Social Welfare for Lesotho, between 2007 and 2012, Ramatlapeng was responsible for the clinical, technical and financial management of the Ministry, and championed Lesotho’s achievements in reducing the transmission of HIV from mother to child.
Across her career, she has also been a leading advocate for women in business, serving as founding board member for Lesotho-based industry organisation Women in Business.
Ramatlapeng received her medical degree from Kharkov Medical School, in Ukraine, and obtained her Master’s degree in public health from John Hopkins University, in the US.
Anglo American chairperson Sir John Parker said that the “highly experienced leader” would bring a broad range of domestic and international health expertise at board level across both the public and private sectors.
“Her clear vision and deep understanding of the social benefits of effective healthcare programmes and capacity building through partnership will further strengthen our board,” he commented.
Dr Ramatlapeng would also join the board’s Safety and Sustainable Development Committee, with immediate effect.
