The prestigious Hugh K. Coble award was recently presented to Fluor South Africa for the Natref Clean Fuels II/Octane Project located in Sasolburg, South Africa.

Fluor was awarded a contract by Sasol Group Technology in June 2013 to perform basic engineering services associated with the Natref Clean Fuels II Project. The purpose of the project was to develop, design and build new process units on the site to meet the legislated fuel specifications as promulgated by the South Africa government. Natref, the only inland crude refinery in South Africa, is a joint venture between Sasol and Total.

Within Fluor, a global engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction and maintenance company, winning the award embodies excellence in project execution in all criteria.

“Winning the Hugh K. Coble Award was defined from the start as the benchmark for the project,” said Alejandro Escalona, Fluor South Africa’s General Manager. “The team that was involved, wanted passionately to execute a project that would be a benchmark for the industry in South Africa.”

Criteria for the award include excellence in Health, Safety & Environment, Quality, Project Schedule, Project Cost, Value Creation, Client Relationships, Human Resources, Community Relationships and System Compliance, i.e. Project Management.

Hugh K. Coble is Vice Chairman, Emeritus, of Fluor Corporation. Coble was a director of Fluor Corporation from 1984 and Vice Chairman from 1994 until his retirement in 1997.

He joined Fluor Corporation in 1966 and was Group President of Fluor Daniel, Inc., a subsidiary of Fluor Corporation, from 1986 to 1994.

“We are very proud to receive this prestigious award and we will continue to deliver project excellence,” concluded Escalona.

Based on this project experience, and many other Clean Fuel projects executed around the world like the USD multibillion Kuwait’s Mina Abdullah and Mina Al-Ahmadi KNPC refineries expansion, Fluor is in a unique position to offer clients an integrated EPC solutions approach to deliver Clean Fuel projects.

Fluor has been in South Africa for more than 55 years and its headquarters is based in Woodmead, Johannesburg with offices in Durban, Cape Town, Secunda, Botswana and Mozambique.
