A man exercises along a promenade in Zhuhai, China, with a section of the 55 km Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge in the background. The $20-billion megaproject, which is reportedly the world’s longest sea link, opened to traffic on October 24. The crossing links Hong Kong’s Lantau Island to the southern mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai, as well as the gambling enclave of Macau. Construction started in 2009 and Chinese President Xi Jinping officially opened the bridge on October 23. Critics of the project see the bridge as a visible expression of China’s plan to tighten Beijing’s control over Hong Kong.
