Name and Location
Fehmarnbelt link project, between Denmark and Germany.

Client
Femern.

Project Description
The Fehmarnbelt link will be an 18-km-long immersed tunnel. It will be the world’s longest of its type for road and rail.

The Fehmarnbelt link will be built between Rødbyhavn on Lolland, in Denmark, and the German island of Fehmarn. In contrast to a bored tunnel, an immersed tunnel comprises hollow concrete elements, cast on land and assembled section by section to form the tunnel.

The tunnel will comprise a four-lane motorway and two electrified rail tracks. It will consist of 79 individual elements, each 217 m long, and ten special elements with a lower floor for the tunnel operation and maintenance equipment.

Once complete, it will take ten minutes to travel from Denmark to Germany by car and seven minutes by train.

Motorists will be able to drive at 110 km/h in the tunnel. Electric trains will be able to travel at 200 km/h.

Value
The construction budget for the Fehmarnbelt link is DKr55.1-billion at 2015 prices.
The Fehmarnbelt link will be user-financed. Revenues from the link will repay the loans that financed construction.

Duration
Not stated.

Latest Developments
The Femern Link Contractors joint venture (JV) has been awarded three contracts – two contracts covering construction of the immersed tunnel and the tunnel element factory that will manufacture the precast tunnel elements and a contract covering the construction of the portal structures, toll buildings, bridges and ramps. The three contracts have a combined value of €3.4-billion.

The JV comprises VINCI Construction Grands Projets – lead company for the two tunnel contracts; Per Aarsleff holding – the lead company for the portal contract; Solétanche-Bachy International; CFE; Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau, Max Bögl Stiftung & Co; BAM Infra and BAM International.

The JV has appointed Dredging International as the dragging subcontractor for the tunnel contracts, and COWI as consultant for all three contracts.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
