The South African-German Energy Partnership is introducing European Energy Manager (EUREM) training to South Africa.

The aim of this energy partnership initiative, with the financial support of the German Federal Ministry for Economics and Energy, is to enable industrial stakeholders to put resource-efficient, climate-friendly industrial growth into action. The EUREM will give South African industry the chance to build the necessary capacity to react to changes in the energy market, such as rising energy prices, and use energy efficiency support mechanisms such as 12L, for instance.

Optimising the energy consumption and raising energy efficiency in a plant not only reduces a company’s carbon foot print, but also represents the most socially responsible option to enhance productivity and reduce operational costs.

Course energy efficiency improvements require capital investment and depend on availability of feasible, technical solutions. International experiences, however, demonstrate that energy efficiency is not a technical challenge as such. Moreover, the success of an energy efficiency project depends on the people driving it. “Change is personal”, without competent and dedicated energy managers changes towards energy efficiency are very difficult to realise. The best contracting models and technical solutions are of no use if there are no dedicated persons on the spot who will undertake the implementation of energy efficient strategies.

Realising this, the European Union supported the development of a standardised training programme for energy managers –  the EUREM – to support the achievement of their ambitious energy saving and carbon-dioxide emissions targets, as well as to support industrial competitiveness. Today the EUREM is recognised as the extra-occupational standard qualification for industrial energy managers in Europe.

Using the EUREM’s “learning by doing” approach, participants acquire the ability to analyse the energy situation in their company, to develop energy saving or self-generation projects technically and to assess the results. Simultaneously, they learn about energy saving economics and how to sell and initiate a project internally. Moreover, the participants learn how to keep a continuous and structured improvement process in motion.

The key element of the “learning by doing” approach is the development of a "energy concept". Each participant develops a feasible energy efficiency project which tackles energetic weak points of the participant's company with a high chance of realisation – high energy cost reduction potential at acceptable investment costs. Thus, the newly attained knowledge is directly applied in practice. This approach leads to application-orientated energy efficiency capacity and immediate, tangible results in the participating company. The development of the "energy concept" is accompanied and supported by the EUREM trainer team, which consists of experienced energy efficiency professionals and technology providers.

Recognising the great success and impact of the EUREM in Europe, the German government took the decision to support the internationalisation of the EUREM training. For instance, the EUREM training was successfully expanded to Latin America, China, Turkey and Morocco.

The EUREM South Africa will be coordinated by the Competence Centre for Sustainable Energy of the Southern African German Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The first EUREM courses will be held in Johannesburg and Cape Town from August 2014.

To learn more about the EUREM training, its impact and benefits, attend the EUREM South Africa introductory event in Johannesburg on July 22 and in Cape Town on the July 24.
