Landlocked Ethiopia is set to start expanding the Modjo dry port, after receiving a $150-million loan from the World Bank.

The country, with one of the fastest- growing economies in the world, plans to double the capacity of the dry port to improve logistics efficiencies and increase trade.

By expanding the port, Ethiopia intends to enhance the performance of the Ethiopia–Djibouti corridor.

The dry port has the capacity to hold 14 500 containers and handles 95% of Ethiopia’s trade, but remains a major bottleneck to trade, owing to inefficiencies.

The World Bank funds will be invested in physical infrastructure and information and communication technology systems, as well as in regulatory improvements, which will increase exports, generate jobs and raise the incomes of producers and traders.

“The logistics sector is the backbone for industrial and agricultural growth, the success of which is crucial if Ethiopia is to meet its goals, as articulated in the Growth and Transformation Plan,” says World Bank Ethiopia country director Carolyn Turk.

Ethiopia has seven dry ports, but Modjo is the key trade hub, as it is the main receiving point for containers arriving in the country from the Port of Djibouti. The facility is located some 70 km east of the capital, Addis Ababa, and 553 km from Djibouti.

When the expansion project has been completed, the dry port will be transformed from a single-user dry port focused on customs clearance to a multiuser, multipurpose facility where third-party logistics providers offer modern services at one site.

Ethiopia does not have a seaport since its former territory of Eritrea declared independence in 1991. The Horn of Africa nation relies on Djibouti Port for about 98% of its international trade.
