Eternity Power thermal harvesting plant project, South Africa
Name and Location
Eternity Power thermal harvesting plant project, North West, South Africa.
Client
Anglo American Platinum (Angloplat) and Vuselela Energy.
Project Description
The Eternity Power thermal harvesting plant project uses waste heat from the Anglo Converter Plant convertor cooling circuit to evaporate an organic liquid and drive an expansion turbine.
The plant has an installed capacity of 5 MW, of which 4.3 MW is available to the grid, reducing the amount of electricity Angloplat buys from Eskom.
The amount of power generated also results in a reduction of the smelter’s carbon footprint and a more efficient use of energy.
The plant is expected to revolutionise the metallurgical sector, as its economical use of the waste heat from metallurgical and chemical processes could be replicated across other large industrial complexes that emit large amounts of waste thermal energy.
Value
R150-million.
The Department of Trade and Industry provided a R30-million grant as part of its Infrastructure Development Support Programme, which leverages investments in the South African economy by providing infrastructure critical to industrial development, thereby increasing exports of value-added commodities and creating employment opportunities. The incentive programme is part of the Critical Infrastructure Programme.
Duration
The project was hot-commissioned in June 2015.
