EPA approves port plans for IOH
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has given its blessing to ASX-listed Iron Ore Holdings (IOH) to develop an iron-ore export facility near Dampier.
The multi-user port will include a 1.5-km-long trestle jetty, a 20-million-ton-a-year stockyard, a permanent desalination plant, an access road corridor to the North Coast highway, office buildings, a fuel farm, waste management facilities, workshops and an accommodation camp.
EPA chairperson Paul Vogel said on Monday that self-powered barges would transfer iron-ore to a large transshipment vessel moored some 18 km offshore, in deep water.
“This proposal is state-of-the-art, not only avoiding the need for dredging but also the construction of massive breakwaters and, therefore, limiting the impact to the marine environment.”
Vogal said that the proposal could be managed to meet the EPA’s environmental objectives, if the eight recommendations were implemented.
“The EPA has recommended marine fauna observers be on duty during construction, and that a log of cetaceans, dugongs and marine turtle behaviour be maintained, with no construction to commence until the observer has verified that no cetaceans or dugongs are within a radius of 1 000 m, or that marine turtles are not within a radius of 300 m,” Vogel said.
“Marine construction will also avoid the turtle nesting period between October 20 and March 10 on any given year.”
Other conditions were the guarantee of proper management of the risk of the introducing marine pests into state waters.
The multi-user port will be managed by the Dampier Port Authority.
