Engen and football partners SuperSport United, along with the PinkDrive organisation kicked-off their breast cancer awareness campaign at the Sunnypark Mall in Pretoria on Saturday, 08 October 2016. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As early detection is critical to saving lives, free tests and education were conducted on-site.
Men and women from all walks of life availed themselves for the testing and education, showing a real interest in gaining awareness of their status. On the day, the PinkDrive organisation conducted 201 tests, with 21 tests conducted on men.
Engen SuperSport United PinkDrive Ambassador, Thabo September was also tested. Speaking afterwards, September said: “This was the most important two minutes of my life and it is important that I lead from the front. The PinkDrive campaign is very relevant to me. I am honoured to raise awareness for this cause.
“I am very happy to assist people in our local communities to get tested early. This can really make a difference in the lives of our people,” added September. In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, SuperSport United will show their support for Pink Drive by wearing pink tops during their warm-up routines ahead of matches. Pink ribbons will also be distributed and displayed in a further show of support.
Brad Bergh, Engen’s Group Sponsorship Manager, thanked Supersport United for participating in the initiative. “We are proud of our partnership with Supersport United and their commitment as our partners to making a difference within the communities in which Engen operates.
“We are always looking at community benefitting projects to support. Soccer has provided us with a platform to give back and assist in building happy, sustainable communities,” added Bergh. The next activation is set to place at the Liberty Promenade Mall on AZ Berman Drive, Mitchells Plain, Cape Town on Saturday, 29 October 2016. The Pink Drive mobile unit testing station will be onsite, operating from 09h00 at the Liberty Promenade.
