The 2015 SAESI Conference and Exhibition, presented by the South African Emergency Services Institute (SAESI), will this year focus on the theme of building resilient communities, through three breakaway sessions focused on education, risk management and societal security.

Addressing a media contingent last month, SAESI president Dino Padayachee declared that, “a community is only as strong as its most vulnerable citizen”, explaining that, in that respect, South Africa consists of several vulnerable communities comprised of large groups of ‘at-risk’ people.

To that end, SAESI identified specific outcomes that would assist emergency management services in creating more resilient communities.

City of Ekurhuleni disaster and emergency management services head Moshema Mosia will speak at the societal security session, Security and Resilience. In his speech Mosia will address the perception that, “the security and wellbeing of people increasingly depends on the continuity of vital functions and individual organisations, local communities, nations and the global community”, touching on how technology and economics affect the interdependent global community.

Other conference speakers will include Gift of the Givers founder Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, who will address issues of skills transfer and education, and Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council CEO Stuart Ellis, who will provide an Australian perspective on resilience, incidence management and recovery.

This year marks the thirtieth iteration of the biennial event, which will run from November 1 to 6.

The exhibition will also feature the latest technology that the emergency services sector has to offer, as well as exhibits on technology solutions for emergency services, disaster management and security markets.

SAESI says the event is the biggest of its kind in Africa and expects about 200 delegates, 44 exhibitors and 2 000 visitors to attend SAESI 2015.

Established in 1959, SAESI is a professional organisation dedicated to the protection of life, property and the environment. It has successfully guided the firefighting industry since its inception and its education, technical, accreditation and constitutional committees have helped create standards, criteria and norms for the firefighting profession.
