Retail group Edcon has appointed Bernard Brookes as CEO and a member of the board, effective September 30, to succeed departing group head Jurgen Schreiber, who would remain on the board as vice-chairperson to ensure a smooth transition.

Offering an extensive 35-year career in retail, Brookes spent the first 24 years of his career with retail group Woolworths Australia before taking up the position of CEO at Australian department store group Myer.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts Diploma in Education from the Macquarie University, in Sydney.

The board had, meanwhile, further appointed COO Urin Ferndale and board member Roanne Daniels as joint interim CEOs from August 16 until September 29.

Daniels would oversee the finance and strategy related elements of the business, while Urin would manage the remaining business items.

“We are very pleased to have Bernie joining the team. He has significant experience not only in apparel retailing in the Southern Hemisphere but also specifically department stores and emerging markets,” commented Edcon chairperson Dwight Poler.
