Name and Location
East London industrial development zone (ELIDZ), Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Client
The ELIDZ and the Department of Trade and Industry.

Project Description
The ELIDZ aims to bring economic growth to the Eastern Cape and beyond by offering investors a globally competitive combination of geographical position, infrastructure, services and labour. This is being achieved in the region by attracting foreign and local investment in the field of industrial development.

As tenants, they will be constructing their factories on fully developed sites offering various property services, including access to high-technology telecommunications infrastructure and various municipal utilities.

The IDZ has 30 investors to date, with 22 of these already operational in the zone. Five other investors are either constructing or commissioning their plants in the zone.

Value
The Elidz has attracted R 3.7-billion of investment since it secured its first investor in 2005.

Duration
Ongoing.

Latest Developments
The ELIDZ launched the first regional open innovation solution exchange platform on June 30.

The Connect and Solve initiative, in conjunction with the Research Institute for Innovation and Sustainability (RIIS), has been established to uncover new ideas and leverage scarce resources, while connecting innovators, inventors and solution providers with solution seekers, government and the private sector.

The new initiative also aims to eliminate barriers to innovation for small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as to act as a platform to promote and showcase regional talents, technologies and inventions.

Further, private organisations, government agencies and nonprofit organisations can publish “challenges” – well-articulated descriptions of real business needs that require innovative solutions – on the Connect and Solve Open Innovation platform.

In line with this, Connect and Solve has also launched two Open Innovation challenges, Firstly, it seeks design proposals for a manufacturing plant or system and the development of the process to manufacture a three-pipe nested copper product for a medium-sized Eastern Cape-based manufacturing company. Secondly, it seeks proposals for a technology or capability that can cost-effectively convert grey water and seawater into industrial water that could be distributed to industrial users.
