The East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) is in the process of trying to identify which sectors of the renewable energy industry it should focus its marketing and investment promotion efforts on.
The developers of the industrial park have issued a tender for consultants to undertake a renewable energy study in the Eastern Cape region.
ELIDZ senior researcher for business development Chris Ettmayr said on Monday that renewable energy was one of the up-and-coming sectors it had identified for good business prospects in the future.
He noted that a number of organisations have shown an interest in starting up renewable energy projects at the industrial park, which was zoned for light industry.
The study was expected to identify which renewable energy sectors would be most viable for the IDZ, but also for the province as a whole.
ELIDZ would appoint a consultant to undertake the study by July 6. The study was expected to be completed within three months.
Ettmayr said that it had already received an overwhelming response from interested consultants.
The industrial park was currently focused on the automotive, marine aquaculture, agroprocessing, pharmaceutical, information communications technology and electronics, and the business process and outsourcing industries.
