Name of the Project
Dominion Energy Virginia offshore wind project.

Location
The project is located off the coast of Virginia, in the US.

Project Owner/s
Dominion Energy.

Project Description
With a capacity of 2 640 MW, the Virginia offshore wind project will be the biggest offshore wind project in the US to date.

Once on line, the project is expected to provide enough clean energy to power 650 000 homes at rated wind speed, avoiding the emission of 3.7-million tons a year of carbon emissions, compared with fossil fuel-based power generation.

Potential Job Creation
None stated.

Capital Expenditure
Not stated.

Planned Start/End Date
All installations are expected to be completed by 2026.

Latest Developments
Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has been named as the preferred turbine supplier for the project. The final number of units and the turbine model remain to be determined.

The agreement is subject to certain conditions, including Dominion Energy’s final investment decision, government permitting and other required approvals.

Meanwhile, Dominion Energy started construction on a pilot offshore wind power project in June 2019, the initial step in designing and building the larger commercial offshore wind development.

The two 6 MW turbines manufactured by Siemens Gamesa will be installed in the first half of 2020, and are on schedule to come on line later this year.

Dominion Energy will leverage key learnings from the permitting, design and development of that project as it goes through a similar process for the commercial offshore wind development.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (turbine supplier).
