South African Airways (SAA) and the Airports Company South Africa have introduced self-service bag counters at OR Tambo International Airport to allow passengers on domestic flights to tag their own baggage.

This is a trial phase, following a testing phase of the systems and equipment.

SAA embarked on the initiative as studies have shown that more than 50% of passengers worldwide want more self-service options to speed up their journey.

Customers departing on domestic flights from OR Tambo International Airport must be in possession of a boarding pass and identification to enable them to make use of the self-service bag facility.

“SAA supports initiatives aimed at making travel easier and more convenient for our customers,” said SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali.
