The Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) has awarded the Department of Environmental Affairs’ (DEA’s) new head office the Green Star World Leadership Award.

The building is currently under construction, with the department expected to take occupation in June 2014. The building was rated at 82 points – the highest achievement for an office accommodation project of this magnitude.

The DEA stated that the project team leading the project was humbled by this international award. It added that the award demonstrated the department’s commitment to sustainable development and raised the bar for the construction sector, demonstrating the department’s leadership for the private sector and other government departments to follow suit.

The head office, which was being built as a public–private partnership, received a six-star Green Star rating for Office Design from the GBCSA in May, making it the first government building, as well as the first in Tshwane, to achieve this rating.
