Name and Location
Cravo-Lirio-Orquidea-Violeta (CLOV) oil project, off Angola.

Project Description
The CLOV project involves the integrated development of a four-field cluster in Angola’s deep-water block 17. Located about 140 km from Luanda and 40 km north-west of Dalia, in water depths ranging from 1 100 m to 1 400 m, the project will bring on stream the CLOV oilfields discovered over a five-year period.

The project will be the fourth upstream project undertaken on the deep-water block, and will include the development of 34 subsea wells, which will be tied to the floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit. The development will have a processing capacity of 160 000 bbl/d of oil at plateau, 230-million standard cubic metres of natural gas a day and a 1.78-million barrels of oil storage capacity. The overall design also includes measures to eliminate flaring under normal operating conditions, and will recover heat from turbine exhaust and vent gases.

The other upstream projects on block 17 include Girassol and Dalia, which are currently in production, and the Pazflor project, which began production in 2011.

The FPSO unit will handle two types of oil – light oil with an American Petroleum Institute (API) gravity of between 32˚ and 35˚, sourced from the Oligocene reservoirs (Cravo-Lirio); and a 20˚ to 30˚ more viscous API gravity oil from the Miocene reservoirs (Orquidea-Violeta). Both oil streams will be mixed and processed in a single train before storage.

The Lirio field, discovered in September 1998, is the fourth oil discovery on block 17. Drilled in 1 365 m of water, the Lirio-1 well is located 32 km north-west of the Girassol field. The well has shown good-quality oil at a flow rate of 11 000 bbl/d.

The Orquidea-1 field is the sixth deep-water discovery on block 17, at a depth of 1 197 m of water. The Orquidea-2 appraisal well drilling confirmed the discovery and expanded the size of the Orquidea field, in October 2006. At a water depth of 1 165 m, the well drilling discovered further oil-bearing reserves in both the Miocene and Oligocene reservoirs.

The seventh discovery made on block 17 is the Cravo field. Cravo-1 is drilled in about 1 357 m of water, about 200 km north-west of Luanda. Flow tests on the well have proved a rate of 12 800 bbl/d of high-quality oil.

The eleventh discovery on block 17 is the Violeta field.

Value
The value has not been disclosed.

Duration
Development drilling will begin in 2012, and first oil is expected in 2014.

Client
Block 17’s concessionaire is State-owned Sociedade Nacional de Combustiveis de Angola (Sonangol). Total E&P Angola, a subsidiary of Total, is the operator of the project, with a 40% interest. Partners in the project include Statoil Angola (23.33%), Esso Exploration Angola (20%) and BP Exploration Angola (16.67%).

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Acergy (engineering, procurement, fabrication and installation); Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) (engineering, procurement, installation and construction contractor); GE Oil & Gas (gas turbines and compressors supplier); KBR (engineering of topsides for FPSO unit); FMC Technologies (subsea production equipment); Framo Engineering (supply of subsea pumping system); Sulzer Pumps (supply of seawater injection pumps); Aker Solutions, subcontracted by Framo Engineering (supply of subsea umbilical and associated equipment); a Technip consortium (static production and water injection umbilicals); Grenland Group (water treatment system for FPSO unit); and Converteam, subcontracted by GE Oil & Gas (five variable-speed drive systems including induction motors for main gas compressors of the FPSO unit) and subcontracted by Sulzer Pumps (two drives and electric motors for water injection pumps).

Latest Developments
Norwegian company Aker Solutions has signed a Nkr80-million contract with Framo Engineering to supply subsea umbilical and associated equipment for the CLOV project. The company will supply a 10.6 km multiphase power and control umbilical that will provide all system functions for the Framo multiphase pumpstation. Final deliveries will be made in 2013.

Meanwhile, a Technip consortium, comprising two of its subsidiaries, has been awarded umbilical contracts by Acergy Angola and Acergy West Africa for the project. The companies, Angoflex Limitada and Duco, are contracted to supply 76 km of dynamic and static production and water injection umbilicals. These will be fabricated at the Angoflex facility in Lobito and are expected at the CLOV site in 2013.
