Crane rail fastening system reduces wear and tear
FASTENING SYSTEM Gantrail MK7 has been designed specifically for crane rail fastening applications in facilities that use cranes for their operations
Automated warehouses, steel mills, power stations, airports, wastewater treatment works, harbours and container handling depots can cut production time losses, when cranes fail, as engineering company Horne Group is now distributing a crane rail fastening system that extends the life of crane supporting structures to make the system more robust.
The system, known as the Gantrail MK7, has been designed specifically for crane rail fastening applications in facilities that use cranes for their operations. Horne Group started distributing the system in South Africa in August.
UK-based crane rail design company Gantrail designs the system, with Horne Group, which is a member of the Southern African Institute of Steel Construction, being the sole distributor of the system throughout Africa.
There are two types of installations, a welded base and a bolted clip-type installation. The welded base clip is welded on site. The bolted clip is placed on a stud that is usually fixed to the gantry during its fabrication.
A clip is available for different sizes of rail and can accommodate even the highest of lateral forces generated by heavy class 4 and 5 cranes.
The Gantrail MK7 pad, which is inserted under the rail, has many advantages. It evenly spreads the load from the rail to the girder, compensates for uneven surfaces under the rail and prevents corrosive wear between the rail and girder. In addition, the slight rotation of the rail permitted by the rubber pad prolongs crane wheel and rail life.
The soft-mounted crane rail fastening system is most commonly used for securing crane rails as the clips are easy to install and are also easily adjustable.
An essential part of the system is the self-locking, adjustable, crane rail-fixing clip. An elastomer nose on each clip applies a controlled force to the rail to restrain excessive movement. Gantrail adjustable clips allow for precise alignment of rails.
The soft-mounted clips on crane rail pads allow the rail to move and rotate by small degrees, ensuring a more even stress distribution between the crane wheel and the rail, and also between the rail and the surface on which it is fixed.
Soft-mounted rails also reduce noise levels and vibration, and compensate for any uneven surfaces in the rail or steel support. The wheel clips are designed to precisely align and securely fix the rails, and accommodate the high forces applied on them by traversing cranes.
