Heavy lifting company Lowveld Cranes approached gear and drive specialist SEW Eurodrive to assist the com- pany in the selection of geared motors for its 10-t crane at a local saw mill, in Graskop, in Mpumalanga province.
The local SEW Eurodrive branch, in Nelspruit, set out to supply all the geared units with all the electronics included as a complete package. The SEW Eurodrive-type MC series industrial gear unit was selected for the hoisting application. The MC unit was fitted with a double output shaft and a 22-kW double disc brake motor.
In addition, a 22-kW MC07 B frequency inverter, complete with brake resistor and line choke, was fitted. The brake resistor ensures that, when the crane goes into the lowering function, the motor will regene- rate power to the inverter and the brake resistor will absorb the regenerated power.
For the long-travel selection, two F-series parallel shaft geared motors with brakes were fitted, in conjunction with a 3-kW Movitrac MC 07 B inverter, an in-brake resistor and a line choke from SEW Eurodrive.
For the cross-travel application, two F series parallel-shaft geared motors, complete with brakes and 1,5-kW Movitrac MC07 B inverter incorporating a brake resistor and line choke, were selected.
