Zingiswa Losi has been elected president of trade union federation the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) after being nominated unopposed.

The nominations of South Africa’s largest labour federation took place on Tuesday morning where Losi and the rest of the top six were nominated unopposed.

National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union's first deputy president Mike Shingange has been elected as the first deputy president.

Losi, who becomes the first female president of the trade union federation, served as its second deputy president under Tyotyo James and Sdumo Dlamini, who served as president.

South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers' Union representative Louise Thipe was elected as the second deputy president.

The elections body announced that two nominations for National Union of Mineworkers’ Nelson Rachosi to fill the position of second deputy president were withdrawn.

Three other national office bearers Bheki Ntshalintshali, who is the general secretary, Solly Phetoe who is the deputy general secretary and treasurer general Freda Oosthuizen retain their positions as they were also elected unopposed.

The official announcement of the winners will be made on Thursday.
