The Copper Development Association Africa (CDDA) , of Wadeville, Germiston, on Gauteng’s East Rand, is a nonprofit organisation sponsored by the Brussels-based European Copper Institute and the International Copper Association, in New York.

The CDAA is responsible for promoting the use of copper in Africa. Its mission is to “defend and grow markets for copper, based on its superior technical performance and contribution to a higher quality of life in Africa”. The association promotes the use of copper in the electricity, automotive, aquaculture and plumbing, and the heating, ventilation and air conditioning sectors, as well as in the healthcare sector.

The CDDA is actively working to develop the downstream production of copper items, particularly in the healthcare sector, by highlighting the dangers of hospital-acquired infections. Thousands of patients die in hospitals every year as a result of infections contracted in healthcare facilities. These deaths can be avoided by installing antimicrobial copper touch surfaces in hospital wards and intensive-care units.

Says a spokesperson: “We are keen to expand the use of copper into Africa. The CDAA would like to partner with government and the mines to pursue the downstream beneficiation of copper and produce copper products. The production of copper tops for bedside and over-bed tables, door handles, push plates and IV stands will also create job opportunities and reduce unemployment.”

The association adds that the introduction of copper fish cages has tremendous advantages for fish farming, as copper nets are antibiofouling, which results in healthier and larger fish. The nets are also predatorproof.

There are many benefits for companies becoming members of the CDAA. Further information can be obtained from the centre director.
