Project delivery and engineering company WorleyParsons says construction is running smoothly at solar energy specialist Abengoa Solar’s 50 MW Khi Solar One concentrated solar power (CSP) plant, near Upington, in the Northern Cape.

The CSP plant is scheduled for completion in February 2016.

Further, WorleyParsons recently completed two similar projects in the Northern Cape and is in the process of completing another one in Kenya.

WorleyParsons was the owner’s engineer on solar developer Solar Reserve’s Jasper photovoltaic (PV) solar power project in Kimberley. This project, which was completed in December 2014, now supplies 80 MW of reliable, low-cost PV power to South Africa’s national grid.

WorleyParsons also completed, as owner’s engineer, Abengoa Solar’s Kaxu 100 MW CSP plant outside Pofadder. The project was handed over to the operations and maintenance team in February, six days ahead of schedule.

Meanwhile, the company was awarded a 32-month owner’s engineer contract in the fourth quarter of 2014 to oversee the construction of the Lake Turkana wind farm, in Kenya’s Loyangalani district.

This project is set to establish the biggest wind farm of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa and represents one of the biggest single private investments in Kenya’s history. It aims to supply 300 MW of reliable, low-cost wind turbine generator capacity to Kenya’s national grid, which is equivalent to about 20% of the country’s current installed electricity generating capacity.

WorleyParsons will showcase its coal, natural gas, renewable energy, hydropower and asset management services at the African Utility Week and Clean Power Africa conference and exhibition, which takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from May 12 to 14.
