Barloworld Power Rental, Cat dealer for Southern Africa will supply prime power generators to the eighth Aerospace and Defence (AAD) Show 2014, which will be held at the Waterkloof Airforce Base, in Pretoria, from September 17 to 21.

The tender to supply the generators was awarded last year and the scope of supply includes 27 Cat generators – three 60 kVA units, four 100 kVA units, two 150 kVA units, 14 200 kVa units, three 300 kVA units and one 400 kVA unit – says Barloworld Power rentals manager Cherese Knouwds.

Barloworld Power will also sponsor the use of four AllightSykes mobile lighting towers. In addition to being the Southern African dealer for Cat Energy & Transportation (formerly known as Cat Power Systems), Barloworld Power is also the regional distributor of Allight mine-specification and heavy-duty civil lighting and water pump products manufactured by Australian original-equipment manufacturer (OEM) AllightSykes. Knouwds adds that all units have to be declared on site by September 7 to allow enough time to make the necessary preparations.

Barloworld Power sales consultant Brendon Hart says: “Our rental business unit is excited to be a part of such a prestigious event. The Cat generators will be used to supply prime power to the entire show, including the various hangars and food courts.”
The industrial, marine and electric power divisions of Barloworld Power will also be present at the event.

“Our industrial and marine presence is synony- mous with the AAD Show. Securing defence equipment through OEMs and marine ship-builders is a concern, considering the drive by government for local supply and job creation,” explains Barloworld Power rental and industrial operations manager Theo Jooste.

“Ensuring that these vessels and equipment are equipped with reliable engines and generators is a primary focus of Barloworld Power. The reliability of Cat engines is key in sectors such as these, where there should be little allowance for engine downtime,” he adds.

The AAD Show is one of the world’s premier aero-space and defence exhibitions. The event marks an important date on the aviation and defence calendar and brings together various global industries, showcasing the latest technological innovations.

Knouwds says the biggest challenge has been coordinating the supply of the generators, as Barloworld Power is also supplying the Sasol shutdown, which takes place during the same period.
It is a complex logistics and procurement exercise that requires months of detailed planning and needs to be completed within a tight programme. Managed by Sasol’s Resource Hub, a myriad of additional incoming inventory, including standby power, needs to be hired or procured for every shutdown, all of which must meet exacting engineering and equipment specifications, she explains.

“Careful planning needs to go into supplying both events simultaneously, [and] on time,” she notes, adding that, despite this, the company is on schedule.
