Graphisoft, the creator of the three- dimensional (3D) architectural design software, ArchiCAD, released the latest version of the software last month.

The software allows architects to create 3D models of buildings and structures in incredible detail, including elements such as lighting, beams, environment and furnishings, says the company.
ArchiCAD 17 has various new features, including priority-based connections, background processing, extended industry foundation classes (IFC) model-view definitions, building information modelling (BIM) object partnership and workflow improvements.

Graphisoft notes that the key features of the new version improved its productivity, detailing accuracy and speed efficiency, compared with ArchiCAD 16.

“ArchiCAD 17’s new priority-based connections accelerate return on investment on the work invested in the creation of the BIM model by automatically providing construction-documentation-level sections and details for the user,” says Graphisoft, explaining that when slabs, walls, columns and beams interact with other elements, their construction is accurately depicted.

Different composites act according to specification automatically, with human manipulation.

“Users can develop structurally correct details and simplify the modelling and documentation of buildings, even when the design is extremely detailed. The software’s end-to-end BIM workflow allows the model to respond to modelling and documentation throughout the project, saving considerable time at the construction-documentation phase,” the company explains.

Graphisoft adds that the introduction of what it deems to be an industry-first background processing support feature allows for enhanced productivity through the creation of large, complex models and faster generation of complex model details.

“Owing to standard requirements, new IFC models have been added to ArchiCAD 17. These include IFC System, IFC Time Series Schedule assignments, assignments with multilevel hierarchy, special base quantities and editable IFC-type product entities.

“This expands the users’ capabilities for defining new data required and allows various content to be exported to other project contractors,” says Graphisoft.

The new open interface for external BIM component providers means users have direct access to an extensive collection of manufacturer content.

“The new version also includes an improved morphing tool, Morph, which enables users to create custom objects, components and structures with modelling flexibility.

“BIMx, Graphisoft’s interactive communication tool for architects, is included in every installation, enabling users to share BIM projects with clients in an interactive environment,” the company explains.

Another advantage of the new version is open-design collaboration, which enables users to share 3D models and two-dimensional drawings, and work with other construction consultants or fellow architects, regardless of the software they use.

“To improve performance, loading libraries and viewing parts in 3D have become twice as fast, owing to a new catching process. New appearances of 3D coordinate dimensioning, stairs and railings have been provided and the RoofMaker tool has a new graphical interface to assist in easier parameter settings.

“ArchiCAD 17 allows users complete architectural freedom, with the benefit of designing in a 3D environment. The BIM simulates the way a real building is constructed – from town planning requirements to the inclusion of intricate details,” the company concludes.
