Company launches new RMU at power expo
RICK ST JOHN Lucy Electric's new products have been developed to automate medium-voltage networks to efficiently distribute the scarce commodity of generated electricity
AEGIS PLUS This new generation of ring main units offers the power industry a safe switchgear unit that meets the changing technical requirements of electricity distribution worldwide
Secondary power distribution solutions provider Lucy Electric South Africa will launch an extension of its ring main unit (RMU) range, the Aegis Plus, at this year’s African Utility Week and Clean Power Africa conference and exhibition, which will take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from May 12 to 14.
Lucy Electric South Africa regional director Rick St John tells Engineering News that the Aegis Plus is the latest generation of the company’s successful Aegis ring main unit range.
He says Lucy Electric, which will be a first-time gold sponsor at this year’s African Utility week – following years of being a silver sponsor – looks forward to launching Aegis Plus onto the African market at the expo: “Africa is an important market for us to launch our new products, which have been developed to automate medium-voltage networks to efficiently distribute the scarce commodity of generated electricity.”
The Aegis Plus is available in 12 kV, 17.5 kV and 24 kV units, with ratings of up to 630 A, and can be tailored to meet customers’ specific requirements. The range is suitable for use in various applications, including power generation and distribution, commercial buildings and infrastructure.
The RMU is available in different combinations of load-break switches and circuit breakers with all live parts and switching functions insulated with sulphur hexafluoride gas in a hermetically sealed, stainless steel tank.
Standalone units are also available, in indoor and outdoor versions, for a broad range of environmental conditions, and have been fully type-tested at global test laboratories to meet the 2015 International Electrotechnical Commission standards.
“Our Aegis Plus has been designed to meet customers’ evolving technical and functional needs. It also incorporates a range of additional benefits for our customers globally,” St John explains.
He adds that the new Aegis Plus RMU capitalises on more than 200 years of engineering heritage, offering a range of additional features and benefits. The range is automation-ready, with integrated remote terminal units in the form of the Gemini 3, which incorporates an automatic transfer scheme, enabling Aegis Plus to be smart-grid ready.
“It offers a cost-effective solution using proven technology; it also features a more compact footprint and delivers superior electrical performance, high levels of reliability, personnel safety and prolonged maintenance-free operation.”
The Aegis Plus RMU has been designed for easy installation and operation. It includes several additional safety features such as electrical interlocking.
St John adds that the Aegis Plus can also be configured using several optional accessories to meet customer specifications, including various inverse definite minimum time-protection relays, improved time-limit fuse-protection devices, an extended array of voltage detection systems and fault presence indication options.
Users also have the option to include cable-termination heights, single- and double- terminations of cables that range up to 500 mm2 in size, and a variety of new surge arrestors.
St John highlights that, in addition to the launch of the Aegis Plus RMU, Lucy Electric will have an exhibition stand at African Utility Week, which the company regards as the biggest platform for power stakeholders in Africa to share ideas and the latest technologies and solutions.
Lucy Electric boasts a history of more than 200 years in the power generation and distribution industries.
