The construction of a R199-million, 100-bed hospital for healthcare provider Netcare Properties, in Pinehaven, Johannesburg, is well under way, says South Africa-based construction company Aveng Grinaker-LTA.

Aveng Greinaker-LTA building business unit MD Marc Meire tells Engineering News that the construction site was handed over to the company in July last year and that construction started in August.

“The bulk of the structure is nearing completion. Brickwork, plaster and other wet trades, as well as first-fix services and bulk services installations, are in progress. Further, we are exceptionally pleased to have been awarded another contract through our established relationship with the Netcare Group,” he explains.

However, Meire highlights that there were delays at the beginning of the project, as a result of last year’s two-week-long metalworkers strike in July and adds that, owing to this, the Pinehaven project’s deadline was extended by two weeks.

The 14 000 m2, double-storey hospital comprises a reinforced concrete frame with flat slabs. Its external envelope mostly comprises brickwork. In addition to the construction of the building, all associated works, including the specialised installations and finishes, are being undertaken by Aveng Grinaker-LTA.

The company previously completed hospitals in Mitchells Plain, in the Western Cape, and in Lesotho. The 230-bed Mitchells Plain hospital was a successfully completed contract for the Department of Transport and Public Works, while the 425-bed Queen Mamohato Memorial Hospital, in Lesotho, was built for public–private partnership consortium Tsepong – in which Netcare has a stake.

“The new Netcare Pinehaven Hospital has provided a platform for us to showcase Aveng Grinaker-LTA’s extensive experience in this specialised area of hospital construction and we look forward to playing a fundamental role in providing Netcare with the infrastructure it requires to grow its business,” concludes Meire.

Aveng Grinaker-LTA is a multidisciplinary construction and engineering group that delivers landmark projects. The company combines African roots and a proud South African heritage that dates back to 1889, and an unwavering commitment to world-class safety and quality.

The company boasts expertise in building, civil engineering, roads, earthworks, concrete, ground engineering, and mechanical and electrical engineering, which it delivers through focused business units acting in synergy. Aveng Grinaker-LTA renders its services to the commercial, infrastructure, oil and gas, power and mining sectors.
