meeco América Latina S.A., the Asunción-based and fully owned subsidiary of The meeco Group, has won a major supply equipment contract in Paraguay. The Call for Proposals was originally published by INTN (National Institute for Technology, Standardization and Meteorology) last September to provide electrification of community centers for 10 off-grid Indian villages situated in the Province of Boqueron’s Chaco region. The project will be financed by Itaipu Binacional, owner of the world’s biggest hydroelectric plant.

This project represents a significant step toward increasing Paraguay’s use of renewable energy, with already 80% of its national energy coming from renewable sources. President Lugo declared this project of national interest, since it will provide great social benefit to over 620 families and 2700 people directly affected by the project. The electrification initiative will provide power to 32 government buildings including local schools, churches and health care centers. Lights, ventilators and some cooling devices will now be fully operational thanks to this renewable energy source, contributing to a brighter tomorrow for all the Indian villages.

meeco América Latina will supply top-tier components for a total project investment valued at $240,000. “We have been actively pursuing opportunities in the Paraguayan market for the last 18 months, and this is most definitely a major milestone for us and for the whole meeco Group” declares Dr. Oliver Jann, President of meeco América Latina S.A. “We strongly believe that Paraguay is set to become the nation with the highest renewable energy sources per capita in the world, and it can only motivate surrounding markets to follow its lead.” Adds Stuart Moss, Director for Off-Grid Solutions, “INTN should be complimented for soliciting advice, analysis, and ultimately equipment from leading renewable energy suppliers like The meeco Group. As a result, these remote villages will receive uninterrupted electricity and significant social benefit for many years to come.”
