Fluor Corporation announced today that it was awarded a contract by Sasol Technology (Pty.) Ltd. to perform basic engineering services associated with the Natref Clean Fuels 2 Project in Sasolburg, South Africa. Natref, the only inland crude refinery in South Africa, is a joint venture between Sasol and Total. The undisclosed contract value will be booked in Fluor’s second quarter of 2013. “Fluor has established a long and successful track record at Natref, including the execution of the initial clean fuels project in 2006,” said Peter Oosterveer, president of Fluor’s Energy & Chemicals Group. “This new contract further demonstrates Fluor’s strong position in the global clean fuels project development arena and our ability to deliver world-class work across Africa.”
This award follows the successful completion of a feasibility study and conceptual engineering by Fluor. The purpose of the project is to develop, design and build new process units on the Natref site in Sasolburg to meet the legislated fuel specifications as promulgated by the South Africa government. In addition, some extensive modifications of existing units will be evaluated and considered. One of the key components of the basic engineering phase is to perform detailed up-front planning and to develop a viable and cost-effective project execution strategy to safely drive the efficient delivery of the project within the approved budget, schedule and specification.
The basic engineering phase of the project will initially be led from Fluor’s Woodmead office in South Africa with additional expertise from other Fluor global locations. Fluor has maintained an ongoing presence in South Africa for more than 50 years and recently dedicated its South Africa headquarters office in Woodmead. Today, there are also ongoing operations in Durban, Cape Town, Sasolburg and Secunda with some 700 employees working on Fluor projects in South Africa.
